The Spitfire Mark 1a N3200 was built in 1939 and was assigned to the 19th squadron RAF Duxford in April 1940.
During the evacuation of Dunkirk, code name 'Operation Dynamo', Squadron Leader Geoffrey Stephenson piloted the Spitfire N3200 from Duxford on his first and only operation, during which he shot down a Stuka before being shot down himself.
He crashed on a beach near Calais and was captured, remaining in captivity until the end of the war.
The Spitfire sank under the sand and was rediscovered in 1986 after strong currents brought it to light forty-five years later.
Dr. Thomas Kaplan and Simon Marsh bought the device in 2000 and restored it.
In 2015, it was generously donated to the Imperial War Museums where the Mark 1a fighter aircraft can be seen flying again.
