The art of damascening is craftsmanship at the highest level and is thousands of years old. The new Pelikan Special Edition Toledo M910 White fountain pen celebrates this special craftsmanship. The highlight of this edition is the decorative sleeve. Various elaborate steps are required to refine the detailed pelican motif on the holder. The special pelican motif of the Toledo M910 White has been hand-refined by a goldsmith with many expressive details, giving the very individual expression its liveliness to the writing instrument. Two pelican motifs can be seen on the surrounding 925 sterling silver sleeve: a small pelican stands together with a pelican with outstretched wings, and the second motif shows a pelican with an open beak. Both motifs are framed by ornaments. During the manufacturing process, the design is etched onto the sleeve, and then the filigree details are hand-stitched. Finally, the surface of the barrel is coated with palladium.

The art of working with Damascus steel goes back thousands of years. It means that steel or iron objects are decorated by engraving a pattern into the surface. A thin layer of gold is then applied over the pattern and pressed deep into the material using a small hammer. To reveal the newly filled pattern, the object is then heated to about 800°C. This causes the steel surfaces to oxidize and turn black, while the gold begins to shine. This technique traveled with the Arabs to Spain and has been perfected over the centuries, especially in the famous Spanish city of Toledo. With the "Toledo" fountain pen, Pelikan pays tribute to this technique with a love for detail. If you own a Toledo fountain pen, you own a piece of art and a piece of history.
