Montblanc Writers Edition Jane Austen LE 1813 fountain pen
Item no: 130682
Few authors in the history of literature have had the ability to create dialogues and bring characters to life as elegantly, ironically, and astutely as the British writer Jane Austen. Montblanc has created the Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen to honor one of the most famous authors of English literature. This edition takes us to the picturesque landscape of Hampshire, where Jane Austen found the peace and inspiration she needed to complete and publish her famous novels starting in 1809. Because she was financially secure thanks to her brother's generosity, she was able to fully dedicate herself to writing, literature, and playing her beloved piano. Her joy over the beautiful square piano she bought when she moved to her small cottage in Chawton inspired the design of the barrel, which is made of precious hornbeam wood.
The gold-coated cap, whose design reflects the historical paneling and fireplace in Jane Austen's home, harmonizes beautifully with the cylinder. In honor of what is likely Austen's most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813, the cap ring is engraved with the Roman numerals XXXIV. This number indicates the chapter in which the overly proud Mr. Darcy proposes to the wise and independent female protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet. On the title page of her first novel Sense and Sensibility, published in 1811, it simply stated that the work was 'By a Lady'.
These words also adorn the wooden inlay of the cap around the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl. The writing instrument itself resembles a wax seal stamp, similar to the one that Jane Austen herself would have used. The rhodium-coated clip of the Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen Limited Edition 1813 is just as unusual as the cap. It has the shape of a braided cord with a drawstring closure and resembles a pouch (reticule) in which powder, a mirror, and the indispensable handkerchief are carried.
The only known silhouette of Jane Austen, which shows her delicate features, is immortalized as a fine engraving on the handmade, two-tone, solid Au 750 gold nib.
Limited to just 1,813 pieces – as a nod to the year of publication of Pride and Prejudice – the Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen Limited Edition 1813 honors this master wordsmith whose subtle humor, keen observational skills, and razor-sharp intellect continue to resonate with and inspire people around the world.
